How We Do It

Step 1: Find Your Class

Little Dragons

Ages 4-7

Fun, high energy classes built to assist little ones in developing balance, strength, flexibility, coordination, timing, distancing, and more. Plenty of structure is provided to boost character development like respect, discipline, cooperation, confidence and focus.

Parents love the positive changes they see in their children’s behavior as well as giving kids an outlet to burn off excess energy. Many of our “Junior Kempo” (ages 8-12) students are graduates of “Little Dragons” and have gained advantages for acquiring a strong foundation early on.

Junior Kempo

Ages 8-12

Developing martial arts skills, learning self defense while gaining the confidence that comes with it can be expected in the “Junior Kempo” class. Strength, flexibility, and martial arts skills are constantly being built in tandem with our character development program. Parent’s love that we have their backs on values that help their children.

Having a respected authority figure, that kids look up to, speaking the same language as mom and dad makes a big difference. A child who is able to complete homework and chores without supervision and gets along with parents, siblings, and classmates is on the right path to becoming a productive member of society.

Step 2: Schedule a Time

Personal Training

We recommend Teens and Adults (ages 13 and up) begin with personal training, we jump right in to practical self defense stances, movement, striking and more. Having an instructor check on your form individually and giving you immediate feedback will ensure good habits are formed early and will help you understand how to get the most out of group classes later, as well as provide opportunity to explain safety tips and protocall.

While I can say most kids love jumping right in with the group classes, we have seen some cases where the group experience can intimidate. If you feel like this may be the case for your child, let’s start with personal training. Whether you start with Personal training or Group Classes, both will be available with your free trial.

Group Class

We recommend Little Dragons and Junior Kempo students (ages 4-12) start with Group Class for their first experience. Seeing the other students in action is an immersive way to understand the etiquette, rules and of course the martial arts. For adults, it may feel a little bit awkward to jump into a social setting with little know-how of the skills being practiced which is why we recommend starting with personal training. Whether you start with Personal training or Group Classes, both will be available with your free trial.

Step 3: Meet Your Instructor

Brandon Sowerby

Brandon Sowerby began training in Karate as a child and has been involved in sports, weight training, gymnastics, and martial arts ever since. Combining his high achievement in Kempo (an art known for versatility) and a strong foundation in Jiu Jitsu, Mr. Sowerby brings a Mixed Martial Arts perspective to the program. Through his studies and experience, Mr. Sowerby has a profound understanding of human movement and body mechanics. These traits combine to make Mr. Sowerby the ideal Chief Instructor for USSD in Sandy, Utah.

While he does maintain his reputation for winning first place trophies in nearly every USSD tournament event he participates in, Mr. Sowerby focuses on supporting his students to ensure the celebration of their victories. Having lived nearly his entire life in Utah, Mr. Sowerby graduated from the USSD Academy for Martial Arts Instructors in 2003 and has been serving the Sandy community from this location since it opened in 2011.

Jason Covey

Jason Covey enrolled in his first Karate program during his grade school years and became more serious in the martial arts just after high school. Aside from martial arts, areas of expertise include fitness and weight training with a recreational and professional history in nutrition and physical fitness.

After having obtained a diverse background in various martial arts styles, he has committed most of his time and energy to Kempo. Jason operates with the philosophy that by maintaining a balanced regimen of basics, self-defense techniques, martial arts forms, and sparring, the student will acquire a well-rounded skill set and aptitude for self-defense. Native to Utah, Jason takes pride in serving the Sandy, Utah community. Jason graduated the USSD Academy for Martial Arts Instructors in 2005 and has been teaching from this location since it opened in 2011.

Maren Sowerby

Maren Sowerby was born and raised in Texas. Growing up, she was always interested in the martial arts but had devoted her time to many competitive sports, including gymnastics, swimming, football, volleyball, basketball, track and field, and more.

Shortly after moving to Utah, Maren found her love for the martial arts after signing up with USSD in 2010. She has demonstrated her tough, competitive and fun personality at USSD tournaments cross Utah, Nevada & California. Having competed in over 10 USSD tournaments, she has never failed to bring home a 1st place trophy. Maren graduated from the USSD Academy for Martial Arts Instructors at the end of 2012 and has been teaching from this location since it opened in 2011.

Gabrielle Nielson

Gabrielle Nielson started training with USSD in 2014 and has since earned her assistant instructor rank through the USSD Academy for Martial Arts Instruction. She has been working through the USSD apprenticeship program at a sprint, having committed to teaching full-time.

Using a professional working proficiency in American Sign Language, Sensei Gabbi is able to empower students with hearing impairments by teaching high energy martial arts lessons in sign language as well as interpreting dialogue spoken during group classes.

Jordan Marriott

Jordan Marriott began training at United Studios to learn self defense, and began his Mixed Martial Arts career shortly thereafter. After thriving for years in which he fought in almost 20 professional bouts and cornered for countless fighters, he narrowed his focus to Kempo and enrolled in the USSD Academy for Martial Arts Instruction before becoming the Chief Instructor of the Saratoga Springs USSD location.

Although he still boxes as a professional, his key focus is teaching the knowledge he’s obtained. As a practitioner, he’s held onto the beginner’s mindset, realizing that no matter how much knowledge you gain, there is always more to learn. As an instructor, he seeks to instill this mindset in his students by finding new and interesting ways to revisit the basics and apply known techniques

Step 4: Start Your Journey

Kids

We invite new students to participate in a group class so the child can get a feel for the training and the parent can get a feel for the studio. If everything goes great we go ahead and set up a 10 day trial. Having a week and a half to try more classes and some personal training should equip everyone involved with the information needed to build their preferred membership. Month to month memberships available, we do not require contracts, and of course there is no obligation or pressure to enroll.

Teens and Adults

We invite new students to try a 30 minute personal training session. If this is the only session you ever do you’ll have fun learning practical self defense basics, concepts for situational awareness and general safety tips. A free 10 day trial is available to attend group classes and be able to make informed decisions when building a membership. We also offer a foundation course.

The course gets you six more personal training sessions to learn and train practical self defense as well as acquire the know how so you can join group classes with confidence. The six session Foundation Course is 80.00 and is recommended before starting the 10 Day Trial for group training. Month to month memberships available, we do not require contracts, and of course there is no obligation or pressure to enroll.
